Cotton Yarn Count (Ne) Explained: What 7s, 20s, 30s and 40s Mean
Summary. Yarn count tells you how fine a yarn is. In the English cotton system (Ne), a higher number means a finer, thinner yarn. This guide explains how the count is measured, how to convert it, and which counts suit which fabrics.
How the Ne count is measured
The English cotton count (Ne) is the number of 840-yard lengths (hanks) of yarn that weigh one pound. A 30s yarn therefore has 30 × 840 = 25,200 yards in every pound.
Because the count is length per unit of weight, it works the opposite way to thickness: the higher the number, the finer the yarn. 7s is a thick, coarse yarn; 40s is a fine one.
Which count for which fabric
These are typical ranges. The final choice also depends on the knit or weave structure, the target GSM and the end use.
Converting Ne to tex and Nm
Tex (grams per 1,000 metres) is common in international specifications. Tex = 590.5 ÷ Ne, so 30s ≈ 19.7 tex and 20s ≈ 29.5 tex.
Metric count (Nm, kilometres per kilogram) = 1.693 × Ne, so 30s ≈ Nm 50.
Plied yarn is written with a slash: 40/2 means two 40s yarns twisted together. Its weight per length is about the same as a single 20s yarn, but it is smoother and stronger.
Combed vs carded cotton
Carded yarn is spun after the fibres are opened and cleaned. Combed yarn goes through an extra combing step that removes short fibres, giving a smoother, stronger and less hairy yarn. Combed cotton is usually chosen for better T-shirts and finer counts; carded cotton keeps costs down for heavier fabrics.
(Carded)
Why count consistency matters
Yarn that drifts away from its nominal count changes the fabric's weight (GSM) and can show as horizontal bands (barré) in knitted fabric. When you order, ask for the count, the spinning type (ring spun or open end), combed or carded, and the supplier's count tolerance.
Is a higher cotton count better?
Not always. A higher count gives a finer, lighter, smoother fabric, but costs more and is less hard-wearing. Towels and workwear need coarse counts; fine tees need higher counts.
What count is used for a standard T-shirt?
Most standard single jersey T-shirts use 30s or 32s cotton. 20s gives a heavier, sturdier tee; 40s gives a thinner, softer one.
