What thread count measures
Thread count adds up the lengthwise (warp) and crosswise (weft) threads in one square inch. A 250T sheet has 250 threads per square inch in total.
Within a normal range, a higher count gives a smoother, denser fabric. Above roughly 400T, many sheets reach the number by using multi-ply threads, which raises the count without making the sheet noticeably better.
