Where recycled polyester comes from
Most recycled polyester is made from post-consumer PET bottles. Some comes from pre-consumer waste, such as off-cuts and rejected yarn from fibre and textile factories. Recycling old garments back into new polyester (textile-to-textile) is growing but is still a small share of supply.
Polyester and PET bottles are the same polymer, which is why bottles can become yarn.

How bottles become fabric
Mechanical recycling, the most common route: bottles are collected, sorted, washed and cut into flakes, then melted into chips. The chips are melt-spun into filament yarn (usually textured DTY for knitting) or staple fibre for spun yarn. The yarn is then knitted, dyed and finished like any polyester.
Chemical recycling breaks the polymer down into its building blocks and rebuilds it. The result is close to virgin quality and can handle mixed or coloured waste, but it costs more and is less widely available.

Common recycled polyester knits and uses
Single jersey and interlock for T-shirts and promotional wear; pique and birdseye mesh for polos and sportswear; fleece for sweatshirts and jackets; and poly-spandex for activewear that needs stretch. Recycled polyester can also be blended with cotton for CVC and TC fabrics with recycled content.
Functional finishes such as moisture-wicking, quick-dry and antibacterial treatments work on recycled polyester the same way they do on virgin.

How recycled content is verified: GRS and RCS
You cannot tell recycled polyester from virgin by looking at or touching the fabric, so claims are backed by certification. The two main standards, both run by Textile Exchange, are the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) and the Recycled Claim Standard (RCS).
GRS covers recycled content plus social, environmental and chemical requirements, and a product needs at least 20% recycled content to be certified. RCS verifies recycled content only. Every company in the chain — yarn spinner, knitter, dyehouse — must be certified, and each shipment should come with a Transaction Certificate (TC) that links your order to the certified material.

What to put in your enquiry
Fabric structure, GSM, width, the recycled percentage you need (for example 100% rPET or a 50/50 blend), whether you need GRS or RCS with Transaction Certificates, yarn type (for example 75D or 150D DTY filament, or spun yarn), colour, functional finish, and quantity. Certified orders can have higher minimums and longer lead times than standard polyester, so mention certification at the start.

Is recycled polyester lower quality than virgin?
