How each yarn is made
Ring spinning draws the fibres out into a fine strand and twists them with a spinning ring and traveller. The fibres lie straight and tightly bound along the yarn, which gives softness and strength, but the process is slow.
Open end (rotor) spinning separates the fibres and spins them inside a fast-turning rotor. It runs many times faster than ring spinning and skips several preparation steps, so the yarn costs less. The fibres are less aligned, which makes the yarn bulkier with a slightly drier, firmer hand.

How to choose
Choose ring spun when the fabric touches the skin and hand-feel matters, when you need counts finer than about 30s, or when the garment must hold up to stretching and wear.
Choose open end when cost per kilogram is the priority, for heavier fabrics in coarser counts, or where a slightly firmer, fuller fabric is an advantage, such as denim, towels and workwear.
If you are unsure, compare a knitted or woven sample of each at the same count. The difference in hand-feel is usually obvious within seconds.
